Closet Goals & Choosing your 2018 Signature Style
Hi my lovely friends.
This #TransformThursday blog post is all about picking your signature style for 2018.
We are here, rounding up January with our year off to a decent start. Wellness is being incorporated in all shapes and forms- fitness ambitions, healthy eating, family time, self care, career goals, relationship goals…the list goes on and we are all the better for it.
On a different note this post is going to talk about something else.
While I am so busy focused on all of the above there is something I tend to forget about until I’m trying to run out the door in something other than PJ’s.
What are closet goals?
Not secret goals you hide like a skeleton. Style goals! Personal love for what you wear. A point in time when you realize you want to rock more than whatever outfit is easiest to reach.
For some reason, and I am sure I am not alone, my closet tends to be one place at home that turns into the Amazon (jungle & online store!! ; ) after a while. It starts off innocently enough, some old clothes here, some new bits and pieces there, and then suddenly everything is everywhere and I am lost at finding an outfit I love that shouts ‘This is Ione’ loud and clear.
*An extra note to moms, I know from personal experience, mom life and post baby clothes heighten the confusing style situation and before long you feel like maybe you will just live in leggings forever (a side note- black leggings are still an essential in my repertoire! ; )
This is not a post about specifically cleaning or sorting clothes. It is about picking your signature piece/or pieces for 2018 and owning them as a central part of your wardrobe.
This is the year for strong confident women (+ men!) and a closet of inner strength is a reflection of this. Read on for a simple to do list + a mini style interview with stylist/writer/yogi/muay thai fighter Yvonne Cruz of Tejana Maluca.
Shop some of my favorite New Year style finds + at the end of my post I will also tell you all about one of my own personal statement style pieces I bought at the beginning of the year- a carpe diem bracelet– to kickstart 2018 (which i’ve mentioned earlier this week on my January Loved List too!)
Highly recommended for anyone like me who literally likes to be reminded of their heart (and goals) on their sleeve ; ) January giveaway for the bracelet also happening here!
~ The definition of signature : “a distinctive pattern, product, or characteristic by which someone or something can be identified.” ~
So why do you need a signature style? It is a lot of fun to have a signature look, and with this in mind it so much easier to accomplish your style goals when you have some true essentials you decide on and love in your closet.
This is not to say throughout the year there won’t be new purchases- great things (and inspiration- hello fashion bloggers!) come out constantly and all the time.
It is just so much easier to feel confident with your style once you have decided on your signature style piece(s) and keep those as the foundation when you create an outfit or shop.
Once you have a few loved classic key pieces, it saves time, it give you confidence in what you are wearing and it takes away a lot of the stressful last minute trying to put yourself together moments.
< One of my favorite colors to wear- mint- and this mint Supre Australia blouse I bought years ago, practically in every color because it was so silky and pretty. Can wear it so many ways, over jeans, with a skirt, under a jacket.. I always get compliments when wearing and still keep it close as a closet signature piece ; )
“You want clothes that successfully express yourself as exactly who you want to be – especially for those important life moments like job interviews, dates, social events! – and most of the time, we simply don’t have the time to figure that out as we are trying to get out the door”.
With all this in mind, here is my simple guide to picking your signature closet pieces for 2018!
Choosing your Signature Closet
1. Take a moment and think about your style goals.
What kind of look are you trying to achieve? What bests represents you and what do you want to put out there? Do you prefer certain colors?
Do you love a classic look, a bold style, bright patterns? There is no saying you can’t be all of those things! But try to pick your biggest style goal for 2018 so you can narrow down the essentials for your closet.
If you need some inspiration, consult your favorite fashion bloggers/ magazines/ look through your closet. What stands out to you? What speaks to you? What makes you feel the best when you wear it/what colors? What is something you would get a lot of use out of?
These are good questions to ask yourself. Personally I love a lot of classic black clothes and denim, as I feel like it gives me a neutral canvas. But I also love and feel like I look best in blush, mint, pastels and cream. After some experimenting in the mirror you will see what colors feel best to you.
Some fun style inspiration:
-If you are like me and like black, one queen of a ‘black, white & grey’ style philosophy is Sara Crampton of Harper & Harley, I love her outfits
-I love Audrey Hepburn’s dress style. Simple and classic, straight lines yet feminine all at the same time
-Edgy Melbourne’s Dangerfield is my go to for eclectic style. My favorite Melbourne pick!
2. Based on the above, and what you decide best represents you, decide what is the one essential piece for your closet. It could be one item you wear all the time, or what you love the most.
For me this is a quality pair of jeans that fit perfectly. A great pair of jeans goes well with just about everything, and you can dress it up or down! A dark blue pair of skinny jeans is my essential. And the bracelet I bought to start 2018 is going to be my unique signature 2018 piece.
Make a note of what your one piece is and if you have found something in a magazine/online you think would be your essential make a note of it so you can shop for it (eg a versatile black jacket..once you note it down, you can declutter your shopping list too by pinpointing what you see as essential).
Right now I am all about the details…Love bows on everything & texture..This Cupcakes and Cashmere Jacket is one of my faves, along with this Harvey Faircloth bow sweatshirt and gorgeous navy Zac Zac Posen handbag…pearl love!
3. Using the same process, pick out 5-10 other items that would be essentials for your closet goals. I’m keeping it to this number strictly for the purpose of keeping it simple! You can do more or less, but with a central 5-10 items to work with it is easy to build outfits from there.
For me this would be:
-a quality black cardigan/jacket that I can wear with everything
-soft good quality black tees that I can slip on over jeans or with a skirt
-a versatile tan clutch that goes with everything/an everyday tote bag
-a simple necklace/bracelet that represents my style
-a gold/tan pair of sandals that goes with everything (as you can see I am all about the versatile pieces!)
-a little black dress
-a pair of comfortable heels
-a pencil skirt I can dress up or down
-a black pair of leggings or tailored pants
If your items are on a purchase wish list, note them down as closet goals to pinpoint these items when you shop.
My favorites: Wedges, off the shoulder everything and black and white has always been a love of mine. Black essentials + pretty blouses always make it into my top 10. I also love pencil skirts/dresses for dressing up or casual days with sandals 🙂 This year I am all about the pastels, denim (my fave kut from the kloth jeans!) and my picks below as we head into spring…

3. Once you have your selected pieces in your hands give these items a central spot in your closet. Keep them front and center so they are ready to go when you need them. If they are easy to access and pressed/ironed it will be easy to put an outfit together in a hurry. If you need to, write your signature list on a piece of paper and stick in your closet as a reminder of what you love the most to wear!
If you have inspiration in the form of a magazine cut outs, create a style vision board, they are an amazing thing. Create a board/vision of your favorite styles and hang it in your closet somewhere you can see it.
4. The best part!!
Have fun creating outfits using your signature items as a base. Wear those signature jeans with a mix of shirts. Throw your favorite signature jacket on over anything and everything you want.
There are no strict rules and you can mix it up whenever you like but the simple task of having your signature style picked out will make you feel like the best version of yourself when it’s time to find something to wear.
It will also save time when you are shopping with clearly defined goals, in addition to buyer’s remorse later when you spend then realize you will hardly wear something!
Why go through the effort of picking out your signature pieces?
You will have confidence in your clothes with your newly defined closet without having to dig through the masses to find something to wear.
I like to think of icons like my favorite mentioned above Audrey Hepburn. Her style was simple, taking classic wardrobe essentials and wearing them with confidence.
When you know what those essentials are for you (and everyone is different!) dressing room life will be so much simpler! And confidence in your closet will be a lot easier to achieve.
Enjoy your newly defined closet, and most of all, have fun with it!
As well as #TransformThursday it is #TakemebackThursday in its most candid form- I am going to share one or two photos of mine from the last few years.
Remember those photos before the basically a camera Iphone 10 was invented? Sorry they are a little grainy but they are authentic #myownstyle and that is what matters. The point is it can be fun to look back at old photos for inspiration and realize there are little details you have always been drawn to ; )
All of us have a unique style. It is powerful to embrace your own perspective. Owning your closet is all about working it! And next I have someone doing exactly that.
Content creator Yvonne Cruz of Tejana Maluca is sharing her signature style with us below. Her blog embodies a lifestyle about owning your inner strength as well as fitness training, style and self expression in all its unique forms. Read on for another style perspective…
Q&A : Yvonne + Signature Style
To me, a signature style is…
An authentic expression of oneself. Signature style is the ability to communicate who you are through clothes. Someone with signature style wears what they feel best in and is unapologetic about it. They know that they like and don’t like.
My personal signature style is…
Sporty bohemian! Those two might sound like the clash but it describes not only my style but my personality too. I’m a yogi who meditates daily but I’m also Muay Thai boxer who gets punched in the face for fun.
I love track pants, joggers, and menswear inspired pieces like blazers and loafers. I mix them in with more boho pieces like floppy hats and flowy kimonos.
My closet favorites are…
I guess I mentioned some in the previous question! Haha. But right now some of my favorites are
1. A chunky, maize, chenille cardigan that is hands down the most comfy and warm thing I own. It looks great on top of literally anything!
2. My long navy pinstriped blazer/jacket, much like the cardigan its comfy and great for layering. I’m all about the layers! It look great with a baseball hat and jeans for chic but laid back look.
3. My chunky Balenciaga inspired boots have been a closet staple of mine for years. I’m very much a comfort AND style girl and these meet both criteria. Don’t do high heels but want something other than sneakers? Boots!
What will this years 2018 style trends be? Do I need to follow a trend?
Well, if you were to google 2018 trends you’d get a million different answers. You can forecast trends but like the weather, nothing is certain until it arrives. I think the key to signature style is to have your core elements and pieces down and then incorporate any trends that speak to you and disregard those that don’t. That way you make trends your own. Plus, it’s good for you and the environment not to buy a completely different wardrobe every season!
That being said the 2018 trend I’m all about is 80’s sportswear bring on the track suits and windbreakers!
I also hear pastels are in and I think that will be a fun palette to play with.
Style is all about what represents you and what you love. It can be pretty, edgy, classic, sporty, ‘old fashioned’, colorful, conservative, preppy, whatever you want it to be! It could be a little of all of those. It just needs to represent you.
